Kenneth Branagh May Direct Kevin McKidd In Thor Film

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

It isn’t official yet, but according to MTV.com, Kevin McKidd said in an interview that he is contending for the role of Thor in Marvel’s new film version set to debut in 2010, and that Kennth Branagh is supposed to be directing it.

McKidd was the star of HBO’s “Rome” series, and of my favorite series from last year, “Journeyman,” which NBC cancelled after 13 episodes. I’ve been looking forward to seeing him in another leading role, and I think he’s perfect for Thor.

The possibility of Branaugh directing any superhero film surprised the heck out of me– he’s an English Shakespearean actor famous for directing and starring in some of the best big-screen versions of Shakespeare plays, especially Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing. I imagine he’s the best pick to coninue the new character-driven tradition of superhero movies started by “Iron Man” and “Dark Knight.” He’s a deep, pasionate director, and I can’t imagine he would take on the project if it wasn’t about something real and human.

Though I’ve always loved the Marvel Universe, I’ve never been a Thor fan and wasn’t especially excited about the movie version until now, but if this is indeed the direction Marvel takes the film, it could very well turn me into a Thor fan, much like the Daredevil and Iron Man films made me pay more attention to those characters.
