First Lady of Star Trek Majel Barrett Roddenberry Dies at 76

Friday, December 19th, 2008

The late Gene Roddenberry’s wife, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, unfortunately passed away yesterday at age 76 from leukemia.

She was a huge part of the Star Trek legacy and played several roles in the franchise. Known most as the voice of the computer in every Trek incarnation, she was also Number One in the original pilot, “The Cage,” (and Roddenberry had every intention of keeping her as one of the main characters but the studio wouldn’t go for a female first officer), and the Spock-infatuated Nurse Chapel in the original series, Deanna Troi’s mother Lwaxana in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. She also did a lot of voices in the short-lived Animated Series.

Here’s a neat blog with some video links of great Majel Barrett moments.

She was a lady with a lot of spirit and enthusiasm, and had some real acting chops, best displayed (in my opinion) during her appearences as Lwaxana in DS9 (see “The Foresaken” and “The Muse”).

She also attended lots of Trek conventions and was always very grateful to fans for keeping Roddenberry’s legacy alive.

She certainly won’t be forgotten by this Trekkie. May she rest in peace.
