Vince and I just started a new video series the week as a companion to the podcast called Geeks Not Nerds! Each episode, we’ll choose a topic and each of us will get exactly one minute to lay out our opinions. When that’s done, we’ll spend three minutes debating the points we made. Our first episode is a debate about whether the Wii is holding up well as a NextGen console. We hope you’ll check it out!

I’ve been the blog editor for Geek Speak for nearly a year now, providing news, film and television reviews, and more recently, podcasts. I’ve mentioned some of my other side projects in the blog before, especially my writing endeavors and my weekly Star Trek club. But I’m sure none of our readers are aware that my wife and I also invent and produce our own card games, right out of our home.
We’ve finally launched our own web-based company, Purple Cloud Games. Our games are unique, diverse, and often hilarious; the kind of stuff that doesn’t make it to the shelves at Wal-Mart. Right now, we offer three different games, with a fourth on its way soon.
Our games are fun for people of many ages and tastes, but not too complicated for really anyone.
CLIFFHANGERS! is our customizable party game. It’s the simplest, yet funniest game you can play with a big group. It requires almost no explanation. We got the idea from season cliffhangers, like “The Best of Both Worlds” in Star Trek TNG: Your Captain just got assimilated by the Borg? What’re you gonna do??? Unforunately, there’s no Borg in our game, but you’re faced with some problem and you have to solve it or respond to it with a Conclusion in your hand, like “You’re ambushed by ninjas!” and you might play, “Convince someone to commit suicide.” It gets pretty funny. If there’s a question about whether an answer is valid, the group votes, and if it doesn’t work, you have to draw a new Conclusion. Whoever runs out first wins.
We currently have six expansions and they all mix for more outlandish possibilities. Each set comes with 96 Cliffhangers and 84 Conclusions, and cost $12.00 apiece. We also have a deluxe set where you can choose your favorite 4 expansions, and it’s $40.00.
Our expansions are CLIFFHANGERS! (the original), CLIFFHANGERS! Again, CLIFFHANGERS! Sci-Fi, CLIFFHANGERS! Horror, CLIFFHANGERS! Super Heroes, and CLIFFHANGERS! Cliches.
Historical Turbulence is our family/strategy game for fans of time travel, history, or both. You have to complete three missions to put the broken timeline back together, and you complete your missions by putting correct historical figures and artifacts together to make sure events happen the way they’re supposed to. You might help Luther hang the 95 Thesis, or you might have to prevent Sun Tzu from using a cell phone. Finish your missions before your opponents finish theirs to win! Historical Turbulence is $12.00.
We also have a fun word game called zom-Bies, where you have to put five-letter words together in a graveyard without getting your letters eaten by your opponents’ zom-Bie letters, or their zom-Cies, zom-Dies, zom-Eies, etc. Score bonus points by making horror-related words like “vampire” or “blood.” Whoever gets to 50 points first wins! Zom-Bies is $10.00.
